Biography
The pianist Lilit Grigoryan has established herself as a key figure in the European music scene in recent years. Maria João Pires describes her as a musician of exceptional expressiveness with a clear and decisive musical language. The international press praises her interpretations as mature beyond her years (BBC Music Magazine) and celebrates her as a beacon in the field of interchangeable pianism (MDR Kultur).
The year 2025 marks a significant milestone in her career: Sonata Facile, her solo debut album, will be released in February on Berlin Classics, marking the beginning of an exclusive collaboration. The recording focuses on supposedly “easy” sonatas and sonatinas by Mozart, Ravel, Beethoven, and Medtner, which prove to be technically demanding and musically profound.
She had already made a significant artistic impact in 2024. Her debut at the Berlin Philharmonie with the ensemble Dimensions, which she founded, an impressive concert with the Hamburger Camerata at the Elbphilharmonie under Vilmantas Kaliunas, as well as a highly acclaimed tour of China, were among the season’s highlights. She performed at renowned festivals such as the PAAX GNP Festival in Mexico, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and the Krzyżowa Music Festival, collaborating on solo and chamber music projects with artists such as Viviane Hagner, Daniel Müller-Schott, Karolina Errera, Alexey Stadler, Sasha Rattle, and Sara Ferrández.
As part of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, she co-led a masterclass at the Rostock Summer Campus with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, dedicating herself intensively to working with young musicians.
As both a soloist and chamber musician, she is in high demand worldwide. Her performances have taken her to leading concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Philharmonie de Paris, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, BOZAR Brussels, Palau de la Música Catalana, Auditorio Nacional de Música Madrid, and Halle aux Grains in Toulouse. She has also been a guest at major festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Festival d’Auvers-sur-Oise, Colmar, and the Verbier Festival.
She also enjoys great recognition in the field of chamber music, performing with artists such as Maria João Pires, Viviane Hagner, Claudio Bohórquez, Valeriy Sokolov, and Karolina Errera.
In addition to her concert activities, Lilit Grigoryan has released several highly acclaimed albums. Her debut album was released in 2012, featuring works by Scarlatti, Schumann, Bartók, and Khachaturian. This was followed by chamber music recordings with Sarah Christian and Hiyoli Togawa, as well as the internationally celebrated album Variations sérieuses (Orchid Classics, 2018), featuring works by Bach-Busoni, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bizet, and Szymanowski. Her 2021 recording of Mompou’s Música callada was recognized by Apple Music as one of the best releases of the year.
Born in Yerevan (Armenia) in 1985, she began her musical training with Arkuhi Harutyunyan and later studied with Sergei Sarajyan and Matthias Kirschnereit. From 2012 to 2016, she was an Artist in Residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Belgium, where she was mentored by Maria João Pires—an artistic connection that continues to this day. She has been awarded the prestigious Armenian President’s Cultural Prize and has been a Yamaha Artist since April 2023.
Lilit Grigoryan is currently a lecturer and artistic associate at the Rostock University of Music and Theatre. She is also deeply dedicated to sharing her experience with young musicians at the Young Academy Rostock.
